The Eastern Front. In 1914 four great monarchies lay east of France: the Hohenzollern (Germany), Habsburg (Austria-Hungary), Romanov (Russia), and Ottoman (Turkey). None of them survived the war. Russia fought with the Western Allies against the other three, collectively known as the Central Powers. In 1914 Germany had to divert divisions advancing on Paris to save its eastern provinces from the Russians, who mobilized faster than expected.
